SUMMARY:Family Gallery Workshops
DESCRIPTION:Come and explore our exhibitions with our friendly learning team and use resources in the Salmon Gallery to explore through a range of creative workshops. Each week brings something new inspired by our gallery exhibition ‘We Grown-Ups Can Also Be Afraid’ in Gallery 1 – perfect for families and children. Spaces are limited to give participant enough space and are pre-bookable only. \nWhen booking tickets\, please book the accurate amount of children and adults coming to each workshop. Adults must stay with their children at all times. \nWorkshops are free for all but we offer Pay What You Can tickets to help support the continuation of this work for our communities. \nItinerary of workshops: \nWorkshop 1: Gallery den building (19 July\, 9 August\, 30 August\, 20 September & 11 October) \nWe love creating safe gallery spaces for families to explore creatively\, especially in challenging times. This fun session is inspired by Fransisca Anuit’s installation in the exhibition. Families are invited to come and build dens in the gallery\, using found and recycled materials\, building towers and playing with the properties of materials. We will create a village of sculptural dwellings to play in during these free summer sessions. \nWorkshop 2: Hotspots studio gallery (26 July\, 16 August\, 6 September\, 27 September & 18 October) \nInspired by Mona Hatoum’s Hotspots neon globe\, join us for this fun and creative gallery session. The exhibition invites us to reflect on the world we live in today – to explore how being creative and making art about being in the world\, can help us express ourselves and process what is happening around us. We will provide art materials for you to create your own artwork inspired by the exhibition\, and invite you to display your work in a pop-up exhibition at the end of the session. \nWorkshop 3 : Climate changers (2 August\, 23 August\, 13 September & 4 October) \nWe love the painted animation by Jacco Olivier entitled Saeftinghe\, 2006\, which tells the story of a town in the Netherlands that was reclaimed by the North sea in 1537. What does climate change look like right now? Using paint sticks and recycled materials\, create a series of pictures that tell the story of our changing land and seascapes\, from your point of view.

SUMMARY:Zoo Indigo presents The Conditional Citizen (Don’t You Want Me Baby?)
DESCRIPTION:The Conditional Citizen (Don’t You Want Me Baby?) is a darkly humorous performance about the absurd dance of trying to fit in. She copies. She mimics. She sheds. At border control\, she strips off her heritage coat with a smile. ‘Don’t you want me\, baby?’ But who really gets to cross\, to stay\, to be accepted\, and at what cost? \nCreated by Zoo Indigo with an ensemble of emerging performers from migratory contexts\, this multidisciplinary piece weaves movement\, multilingual spoken word\, original music and live song into a politically charged exploration of home\, loss\, and the surreal choreography of borders. \nSet against a haunting soundscape that echoes through dunes of discarded clothes\, The Conditional Citizen (Don’t You Want Me Baby?) tackles the strange rituals of border crossings with satire and sorrow. In the shadows of Brexit and the government’s hostile immigration policies\, this performance is a timely and provocative response to a world where identity must be negotiated\, stripped back\, and reassembled. \nThis show is a work-in-progress. \nRecommended Price: £10 \nAge Guidance: 16+ \nShow Warnings: Themes on Xenophobia\, forced migration and displacement \n  \nWhat are ‘Pay What You Can’ tickets?\nWe believe that that arts should be accessible for all. For this reason some of our shows and events this year will be ‘Pay What You Can’\, meaning that you decide how much you can or want to pay. This expands access to the arts for those who may not have been able to participate otherwise\, or gives others the chance to support those who cannot by paying a bit extra. \nYou will see multiple prices available for each show or event. You can select whichever price you can afford or would like to pay – thank you. \n

SUMMARY:Deaf Artist-led BSL Tour of We Grown-Ups Can Also Be Afraid
DESCRIPTION:Join Deaf artist Rubbena Aurangzeb-Tariq on a BSL Tour of ‘We Grown Ups Can Also Be Afraid’– an exhibition that takes its name from the Swedish nursery rhyme that features in the show. \nDrawn from the David and Indrė Roberts Collection\, one of the UK’s foremost private art collections\, the exhibition encompasses sculpture\, works on canvas\, moving image and installation. The artists represented in the exhibition respond to these themes in very different ways\, but their practices are connected by a sustained engagement with globally important issues that can often feel too big and too difficult for us to think about. They collect\, build\, stitch\, carve\, burn\, staple\, break and put back together many different materials to shape works that speak about their concerns. \nThis is not an exhibition about art and activism. The artists represented may not consider their work as a form of political activism – indeed\, there is no sense that we are being lectured to or told what to think. Instead\, it seems that we are being invited to direct our attention to something urgently important\, to look more closely at the world as it is now. \nRubbena will be leading the tour in British Sign Language (BSL) capturing the curator’s insight into the exhibitions for the participants. A BSL Interpreter will also attend. \nThis friendly tour is free\, and open to everyone. The tour will be Deaf-led and tailored for Deaf audiences. \n  \nAbout Rubbena Aurangzeb-Tariq\nRubbena Aurangzeb-Tariq is a London based painter and installation artist. She has exhibited internationally in New York\, South Korea\, Canada\, Paris\, Sweden and the UK. Over the past few years she has led BSL tours for galleries such as the Hayward\, Tate\, Wallace Collections and the Science Gallery.

SUMMARY:Angélica Teuta: Inner Jungle [Putumayo]
DESCRIPTION:Angélica Teuta creates art based on the concept of ‘Emotional Architecture’\, building common spaces through emotions\, human connections and creativity. \nThe Colombian artist’s work goes beyond the visible structures of walls and buildings. Teuta’s artistic practice sees her creating spaces which feel meaningful to visitors. She does this by considering how people relate to each other and by exploring the importance of cultural roots and ancestral knowledge\, as well as our deep links with the natural world. \nInner Jungle [Putumayo] offers relief from the pressures and stress of city life. It highlights how much greenery we have lost in urban areas and questions how we can create spaces which soothe our soul – whether they exist in reality or simply in our imaginations. \n  \nGallery Opening Times:\nWeekdays\, 12pm – 5pm\nWeekends\, 12pm – 4pm \n  \nExhibition Accessibility:\n\nOur friendly team of volunteers and gallery invigilators can tell you more about the artworks and artists.\nSound and light levels can be adjusted.\nSeating is available in all gallery spaces.\nGallery interpretation is produced in large print as standard.\nA braille guide for the exhibition is also available from the gallery desk.\nFilm and video artworks are subtitled\, or where this is not possible a transcript will be available.\nEar defenders are available from the gallery desk.\n\nA full guide to accessibility and facilities information across our spaces can be found here. \nIf you require an adjustment that isn’t mentioned please contact us ahead of your visit and we will try to meet your request within our capacity.

SUMMARY:We Grown-Ups Can Also Be Afraid: Creativity in Times of Crisis
DESCRIPTION:The times in which we live are characterised by precarity and instability on multiple fronts\, with major issues confronting society including climate crisis\, global conflict\, genocide\, mass migration\, and the violence of Western imperialism. ‘We Grown-Ups Can Also Be Afraid’ explores how work by some of the most significant artists of our era can help us respond to the anxieties of our contemporary world. \nThe name of the exhibition\, ‘We Grown-Ups Can Also Be Afraid’\, comes from the title of the work by Nina Beier and Marie Lund featured in this exhibition. This title is itself taken from a 1978 song written by Bjarne Jess Hansen which he wrote in response to his then six year old daughter’s question about whether adults also get scared. The lyrics speak of threats\, fear and the need to protect and preserve – a social commentary wrapped in an accessible melody\, acknowledging the universal experience of fear and encouraging open discussion about it. \nArt can help us to share stories\, to reflect on individual and collective responses to conflict\, to process the unimaginable and empathise with the experience of others. The works brought together in this exhibition may not provide an easy solution to the things that keep us awake at night\, but collectively they ask: What does it mean to make art now? Do artists have a responsibility to respond to our contemporary moment? And what responsibilities do we have to sit up and pay attention? \nThe exhibition is curated by Rachel Graves\, with support from Pamela Vivas\, Visual Arts Officer\, Attenborough Arts Centre. It has been selected from the David and Indrė Roberts Collection\, managed by the Roberts Institute of Art. \nParticipating Artists: Francisca Aninat\, Fiona Banner\, Phyllida Barlow\, Nina Beier and Marie Lund\, Huma Bhabha\, Ayan Farah\, Mona Hatoum\, Jacco Olivier\, Doris Salcedo. \nImage – Artwork: ‘Hot Spot’\, Courtesy of the David and Indrė Roberts Collection. © Mona Hatoum.
