SUMMARY:Understanding Art Better
DESCRIPTION:A series of five talks with discussion time for anyone with an interest in understanding and challenging their views on art. \nThese accessible talks with discussion time are intended for anyone interested in developing their understanding of art\, whatever their existing level of knowledge. Some historical context for individual artists and schools of art will be given but the emphasis will be on appreciating individual works of art and how and why they were created. You will not be expected to like every painting\, print\, or piece of sculpture seen on screen but you will be able to challenge the ideas and arguments presented. \nThe five talks will run on Wednesday mornings\, 10:30am -12pm\, on the following dates: \n15 October: Bad Art: What is it? Does it matter? \n29 October: The Landscape\, from its romantic origins to its Expressionist explosion. \n12 November: Let’s Face It: Exploring portraits and self-portraits\, from Albrecht Dürer to David Hockney and Beryl Cook. \n26 November: Sculpture: Three-dimensional art\, but not necessarily statuesque models\, from Michelangelo to Brancusi. \n10 December: Getting Graphic: Graphic art in prints and books. Agents or mere reflections of social change? \nYou can book each talk individually or book all 5 talks and save 10%. This will apply automatically at checkout when all 5 tickets are added to your cart. \n  \nAbout the tutor:\nTutor David Antill ALA MA has been a member of the Attenborough Arts Centre’s art history teaching team for a number of years. Previously a librarian\, union official and teacher of law\, David researched in the graphic arts for his Master’s degree and his continuing research interests are in avant-garde art and the schools of wood engraving. \n  \nFurther information:\nParticipants must be aged 18+. No prior knowledge of art history or study experience is required\, just an interest in finding out more about art history! \nIf the course/workshop you’d like to book is sold out\, we do operate a waiting list – simply contact our box office team on 0116 252 2455 / arts-centre@le.ac.uk and ask to be added to the waiting list. SUMMARY:Introduction to Collagraphs
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a creative day exploring the versatile printmaking technique of collagraphy. \nDiscover the unusual variety of materials we can use to make the unique textured surfaces for your printing plate and then let the fun begin\, inking up and printing your plates! \nDuring this one-day workshop you will: \n\nLearn all about collagraphs.\nUnderstand how to create a plate using different tapes\, textured surface and cutting and peeling away areas.\nLearn how to print a collagraph and produce a series of prints to take home.\n\n\nAbout the Tutor:\nTutor Jo will introduce you to collagraphs through example work and demonstration. With guidance you will learn how to construct your own Collagraph plate\, experimenting with a range of tapes\, textured papers\, pastes and glue to build up surfaces. You’ll also work into your plate\, cutting away and peeling back areas before exploring a combination of printing techniques to produce a series of rich\, atmospheric collagraph prints. \nTutor Jo Shearer is an artist and art educator living and working in Leicestershire. Her belief is that art is for everyone. It is another language for expressing and communicating our experiences\, thoughts and emotions which often reflect the world around us and how we fit into it. Art can demonstrate a tremendous level of skill and be aesthetically pleasing; however\, the greatest strength is in its capacity to express and unite people. Jo studied Visual BA (Hons) Arts and English Literature and a PGCE in secondary art. She taught in schools and colleges in Hertfordshire and Leicestershire for over 10 years. \nAfter leaving mainstream education she continued her love of teaching through tutoring and went on to develop workshops like this one. She enjoys the freedom to work in a variety of media and has an ever-increasing love for print. She enjoys nurturing creativity and developing individuals’ skills to build confidence in their own work as well as evoking a sense of calm and release of emotions through the process of making. Her personal work explores the spaces that we inhabit\, the collection of experiences and emotions that connect us to a place and the inherent beauty of the natural world in all its forms. \n  \nFurther Information:\nThis one-day workshop will run on Tuesday 9 December\, 10am – 4pm\, with a short break for lunch. SUMMARY:Stamp & Print: A Set of Decorations\, Bringing the Outside In
DESCRIPTION:Use foliage\, paint\, gel printing plates and botanical stamps to create a set of beautiful hanging decorations. \nExplore the world of simple nature-based printing in this hands-on half day workshop. Let the plant’s shapes\, textures and your preferred colours inspire your creativity. \nAbsolutely no experience necessary – just an interest in printmaking and an apron! \nYou will: \n\nLearn how to select suitable botanicals and work with ‘stay open’ inks.\nCreate unique plant prints\, using a gelli plate\, over layered with stamped impressions.\nTake home your very own set of 5 wooden-based decorations\, ready to hang or gift!\n\n  \nAbout the tutor:\nTutor Su France is a rural-based printmaker and earth pigment textile artist whose work connects with the arable farm landscape around her. Foraged medicinal herbs\, oils\, resins\, and other natural materials are incorporated into her work\, bringing it closer to the Earth and to the process of creation. \nMaria’s has exhibited in various galleries in London\, including Saatchi Gallery\, and published in various art publications.
